From Firefox 55 through to 57, the same trouble continues, so this question is still valid. This issue only applies to Raspberry Pi running Ubuntu. For those who need a working version and got as frustrated as I did, here is a workaround. There does not seem to be any way to fix this issue, except by downgrading Firefox.

By default it asks for confirmation and then logs you out (i.e., the --logout argument is assumed unless overridden with --power-off explicitly). You can also tell the command to not prompt for confirmation on logout: --no-prompt. End the session without user interaction. This only works with --logout.

In Ubuntu 24.04 server, the default username and password is ubuntu, but it is only accessible (at least by default) through the command line, and it has to be changed as soon as the user is logged in. However, no password-based ssh access by default!
