Bay and certain other colors (roan, pinto, etc.) for horses are used as the entire name for such a horse; thus a"bay" is a bay-colored horse. Bob-tailed refers to cropping or shortening the tail of a horse, usually to avoid having to clean it, or for appearance. (Somewhat cruel, as the horse cannot whisk away flies.)

People don't generally use"on" with"horse". They do, however, sometimes use"on" with"horseback": I rode the horse to school. They rode on horseback to school. I think that saying"I rode on a horse and looked around" makes it sound more like the ride was an unusual or special thing
