In my experience, a reader is more likely to understand what the seventh art is, than what the other six are (architecture, sculpture, painting, dance, music, poetry). The phrase works as much more than a conceit. Where culture was concerned, it once was polemical — almost “fighting words.”. Forty years ago — even thirty years ago ...

Oct 15, 2007. #2. I'm not much of a boatie, but here's my opinion. Use"in" if it is the type of boat where you are enclosed, or you are below deck for whatever reason. Use"on" if it is a boat where you stand in the open air on the deck. Since to be fishing you need to be outside, this is my choice. However, you could use either and be okay.

United States, English. Jul 16, 2007. #2."A ways off" is a colloquial expression that means something like"some distance away." Occasionally you'll see it with the plural artical ("some ways off")... either way, it's just an expression that refers to a moderate distance.

Nov 29, 2018. #8. No. A boat can be in the water or in the sea, but it usually sails on the water or on the sea. I am sure there are all sorts of exceptions (apart from submarines), but"sail on" is the usual form, unless you name the sea, turning it into a geographical area.

Sep 3, 2014. #2. What is the difference between obligation to and obligation for? That's a good question, Peggy. If Minuchin really intends to convey two different meanings, then I see them this way: He is obligated to the group for some favor or advantage that group has done for him. He is obligated for the group to some other unmentioned agent.

Yes, like se16teddy said, 'in' is the most common preposition, but 'with' is possible -- I dabble with pottery. In your examples I would choose 'in':"I dabble in Italian.""I dabble in quantum physics." I suppose 'at' is also possible.

It sounds very deprecating, since"cute" is usually used to talk about small children. If a child gave you a silly craft project or an acorn as a gift and you said,"That was so cute of her," it would imply that you think that the gesture is kind, in a childish and naive way. If you say,"That's so cute of you," to John, it would sound like you ...

Massachusetts, U.S. English - U.S. Sep 12, 2011. #7. We use the phrase"arts and crafts" for this sort of thing in AE."Let's do some arts and crafts" would be one way to say it. Since"arts and crafts" is the activity, not the product, we do not use"make." If you were thinking of a specific result, you could say"Do you want to make woven ...
